Discover Station Docent Program

The Museum is looking for candidates for the volunteer position of Discover Station Docent.

Discover Station Docents engage visitors in brief, hands-on activities with authentic objects and specimens at mobile carts in the Museum's exhibit halls and introduce visitors to the organization, themes, and concepts of exhibitions.

If you have an interest in natural history, good oral communication skills and an enthusiasm for working with people of all ages and would like to enrich the experience of the Museum's more than six million annual visitors, then you are a potential candidate for the Docent Program.

Applicants do not need a background in science or previous teaching experience: we will train you.

Candidates must be at least 16 years old.

Positions are available both weekdays and weekends.

Weekday docents serve one, four-hour shift per week: 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. or 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m.

Weekend docents serve one, four-hour shift every other week: 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. or 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m.

Minimum commitment is eighty hours for one year (i.e., one, four-hour shift per week up to eighty hours, not including training).

Training includes Museum orientation, object-based inquiry strategies and techniques, exhibit-based research, mentoring, lectures, and on-the-job training.

Training for docents consists of six, two-hour classes that are scheduled over three consecutive weeks on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at the Museum.

The next training session for Discover Station Docents will be held on September 11, 13, 18, 20, 25 and 27.

If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a volunteer in the Docent Program or if you have specific questions, please contact Harold Banks at banksh@si.edu or call (202) 633-1075. Download an application
