Twenty-three tons (over 23,000 kg) of fragments rained down on a Siberian forest in 1947 when a meteorite shattered in mid-air. Even the largest pieces were too small to do more than gouge holes in the ground.
Most of the meteorite fragments found around Wolf Creek Crater are completely weathered to rust. That any traces of metal survive at all is probably due to the region's hot, dry climate.
