Meteorites are named after the places
where they are found, and they are classified into three broad
categories and several subcategories.
- Stony meteorites consist mostly of silicate minerals.
There are two types: chondrites and achondrites.
- Stony-iron meteorites have roughly equal amounts
of metal and silicates. They include the pallasites and
mesosiderites.
- Iron meteorites are primarily metal. They are classified
into 12 major groups according to their relative amounts
of iron, nickel, and certain trace elements.
