Seventh Annual Asian Pacific Heritage Music and Dance Performances Baird Auditorium, ground floor; 2-3:30 pm Experience the performance traditions of Japan, Thailand and Cambodia with artists from the Shizumi Kodomo Dance Group (Japanese), Thai Folklore and Dance Wat Thai Washington, D.C. and the Cambodian American Heritage Dance Troupe. Part of the Institution's celebration of Asia Pacific American Heritage Month.

Rediscovering the Lost Amazon Baird Auditorium, 2:30 pm Curator of Botany Dr. John Kress will give an on-screen guided tour of the recently opened exhibit “The Lost Amazon – The Photographic Journey of Legendary Botanist Richard Evans Schultes.” As a student of the renowned ethnobotanist John Kress will provide a behind-the-scenes look at how the exhibit was created and how Schultes was an influence on his own career as a botanist and explorer. The exhibit offers a view of the Amazon region of Colombia during the 1940’s and 1950’s, including places, plants, and people, through the lens of Schultes’ Rolleiflex camera.

Social Systems in Manakins--Jewels of the Tropical Forest The Naturalist Center in Leesburg, VA; 1:00 - 2:30 pm Dr. Foster will talk about the ins and outs of mounting a research expedition to the rain forests in Southeastern Peru where she carries out her studies of bird behavior. She will also introduce you to the manakins, or jewel birds, and their lek social systems which have been likened to the discos of the 70s.
