Baird Auditorium Both the film and the story it tells are miracles: the film uses state-of-the-art macro photography and the co-evolution of the African fig tree and its pollinator – which differ in size a billion times over – the fig wasp. Award for best film on animal behavior and another for best writing.

Planet Earth: From Pole to Pole (UK, 2006, 59 min.) Baird Auditorium The rarest and weirdest creatures on earth are spotlighted in this journey across the planet. Award for best cinematography to the Planet Earth Camera Team.

Ocean Odyssey: Secrets of the Deep (UK/USA, 2006, 60 min) Baird Auditorium Come on a fantastic journey through the largest habitat on earth into the uncharted territory of the ocean’s abyss. Award for best animation.

Paranormal Pigeons (UK, 2006, 50 min) Baird Auditorium The mystery of how animals navigate over thousands of miles has baffled scientists since ancient times. Today there are several contending theories, but none with a conclusive answer. Award for best editing.

Crime Scene Wild: Sharks (UK, 2007, 49 min) Baird Auditorium Second only to drugs in volume and money, illegal trade in protected wildlife is booming. Former CIA agent Steve Galster applies counter-insurgency techniques to saving wildlife, forging key partnerships with the Wildlife DNA Service, forensic scientists based in the UK who specialize in wildlife crime, and the Wildlife Crime Unit. Award for best environmental film.

Saving Luna (Canada, 2007, 92 min) Baird Auditorium When a lone young orca (a baby male killer whale) is separated from his family in a remote Vancouver Island fjord, he seeks companionship from people and becomes beloved. As conflict and tragedy stain the waters, Luna becomes a symbol of the world’s wildest beauty: wonderful to know and hard to save. Award for best People and Animals film.

It is the opening episode of a three-part series that examines the development of the Galapagos island chain and reveals how creatures have come to grips with their restless Pacific outpost. Grand Teton Award for best of festival.

True Adventures of the Ultimate Spider Hunter (UK, 2006, 52 min) Baird Auditorium Martin Nicholas, a courageous and creative arachnid hunter, is an unassuming British water treatment engineer by day. Travel with him to find blond tarantulas, the world’s most dangerous spider, the world’s biggest spiders, pink-toed tarantulas that can skydive and walk on water and the golden-orb weaver that produces the world’s strongest silk. Best Presenter-led film.

Biomimetics, a way of using nature as a starting point for ideas, has opened up startling new possibilities for the future of science and technology. Natural selection has been solving all the varied problems of life for nearly four billion years. Award for Best Limited Series.
