FishIn the tropics, fish actually do grow on trees.Seahorse

Mangrove trees, that is.

Why is this important to you?

The pristine mangrove systems provide nutrients for marine life and act as nurseries for tens of thousands of tropical species. The coral reef and mangrove swamp are structurally complex communities that protect and support the highest diversity of life forms in the sea.

What is the Smithsonian Biodiversity Program doing about it?

The Caribbean Coral Reef Ecosystem Program in Belize is a research project of the Smithsonian Institution to study and monitor these communities.
