Viewing photographs of such masks, Yup'ik Justina Mike (March 1, 1994) recalled the well-known story of the child with a mouth from ear to ear that ate its mother and then went from house to house eating people. She also described a game the children in her village played pretending to be that creature, Ap'apaa.
