Alaskan Masks.
Many features of the Bering Sea masking tradition are found also among Northwest Coast
groups. At the deepest level are parallels that stem from their common roots in hunting magic and
the hunter-prey relationship. As Siberian-style pastoralism never took hold in North America,
imagery in art reflected a spiritual relationship that saw animals as equal partners in the cycles of the natural world.
