Winter Activities:
Stepping Stones

It is important to create walking paths in your garden for a number of reasons. First, it is a good way to create a design in your garden. Second, it will show people where it is safe to walk so they won't step on plants. Third, the soil will not become pressed down when people walk too close to the plants. Plant roots need to get nutrients, water, and air. If soil gets pressed down, the plants will not grow as well.

[Stepping Stone] [Stepping Stone]

[Teacher/Parent Note] To make stepping stones, Diamond Path students used 13" square wood frames (handmade by volunteers) out of 2x4 pieces of scrap wood. They purchased concrete mix from a local hardware store, mixed it, and poured it into the frames, which were laid upon a flat surface with plastic under the frame. Children then drew designs in the concrete, keeping with the theme of children's gardening. They made hand prints, flowers, vines, rainbows, wrote words like "fun", "friends", "sun", "give and take", etc. into the stone. The frame was removed and the concrete dried overnight. The stones were then set into the garden. (Ask at your local hardware store about the different types of concrete that will work for this project.)
