Winter Activities:
Find out About Your Region

Winter time is a great time to research your local area to find experts in the field of agriculture or gardening. Arrange to invite these people into your classroom or take a field trip to observe other people's gardens. Find out if there are local markets or special plantations in your area to visit.

(Children at Sullivan's Island Elementary School in South Carolina took the opportunity to visit the only tea plantation in the United States. They also invited in a woman to show them how sweet grass is grown and how to make sweet grass wreaths!)

(Children in Arlington, Virginia began to take notice of the local markets held in their area. After going to the market with their families on Saturday mornings, they would bring in their purchased items to share with the class.)
