Winter Activities:
Plant Labels
When you plant seeds or seedlings in the garden, it is good to label them. It
makes people aware that there is something in the garden, and it also helps you
remember where you planted something, and what you planted!
There are many inexpensive ways to label plants in the garden. One way is
to cut up plastic milk carton containers, and write on them with a permanent
marker. Staple a craft stick to the plastic, and you have a durable label.
Abingdon students from Arlington, Virginia, and Diamond Path students, from
Apple Valley, Minnesota, have used 4x6 recipe cards and
permanent marker to decorate the cards with a picture and a plant label,
laminated them twice, and stapled craft sticks to the back of the label.
If your seed packet is empty, it can be laminated and stuck into the
ground by the seeds or seedlings.
One more permanent way to make labels is to cut 3x5 pieces of plywood and
burn titles into the wood. These labels could be used for many years.
