Spring Activities:
Weeding and Cultivating

[Weeding and Cultivating the garden] Weeding and cultivating are chores that must be done regularly, about every seven to ten days (the length of time for weed seeds to sprout). Cultivating means loosening the soil between rows and also around plants when they are larger. Cultivating allows air and moisture into the soil and kills weeds as they begin to grow. Cultivating is usually done with a hoe or a hand cultivator that looks like a metal claw. What other ways can children think of to cultivate the soil? If weeds have gotten too large for the cultivator, they will have to be pulled by hand or shovel.

Abingdon Tips: We sang lots of favorite songs (The Garden Song, I am a Promise, The Telephone Song, Heal the World) and told stories while we were weeding and taking out rocks. We assigned children to create any story they chose, as long as it entertained their audience while they cleared the soil. We also read "10,000 Stones" (in Ginn Reading Book, Gr. 3). Weeding was also a good time to practice spelling words.
