Spring Activities:
Watering

Photo: children watering their garden All living things need water to live. When people want a drink, they go to a drinking fountain or a water faucet and take a drink, or they buy a fruit drink or a soda in a store.

If a plant needs water, it can only wait to get watered. There are only two ways a plant can take a drink: If it rains or if it gets watered by a person.

If you don't have about an inch of rain per week, watering is essential, especially while seeds are sprouting. Plants are best watered early in the morning or late in the afternoon so that the sun cannot heat up the water and burn the plant. Water the base of the plant, not the leaves. A drop of water on a leaf can act as a tiny magnifying glass for the rays of the sun.

Do the students know what a magnifying glass does to the rays of the sun?
