| The Hidden Life of Ants - Photo Gallery | ||
Ants can see movement and differences in light, but not details needed to recognize individuals. However, ants from the same nest smell alike. Whenever ants - such as these Acromyrmex workers - meet, they sweep their antennae over each other to identify one another. If their scents are unfamiliar, the workers will either run away or go on the attack. Photo © Mark W. Moffett/Minden Pictures |
