The Hidden Life of Ants - Photo Gallery
This aluminum cast of the underground nest of Florida harvester ants (Pogonomyrmex badius) shows many large chambers near the surface and shafts spiraling into fewer, smaller chambers deeper down in the sandy soil The ants store large numbers of seeds in the chambers to eat later, while their young are reared in the lowest chambers.
