The Sande mask’s high forehead, elegantly braided hair, and delicate features express the physical strength and inner beauty of a mature Mende woman.

The mask is danced during coming-of-age ceremonies for adolescent girls. Women’s Sande societies in Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea conduct these ceremonies initiating girls into womanhood.
