Caboclos - Native Ancestors

Phyllis Galembo:
I happened to arrive at a ritual for the caboclo spirits. The woman (first photograph) was possessed, and the spirit agreed to have me make the picture. Sometimes you go looking for something, and there it is! I love the way little things—a hat, a cigar, a cement sculpture—come together, so people can express themselves and give a gift to the spirits.

Mãe Stella:
In our world, nothing ends. Everything is transformed. A human being becomes an ancestor. Our ancestors become our guides here on earth.
