Carving a Place in History
An apprentice first masters the
technique and style of his teacher, and then begins to innovate
within the masters style.
Lamidi Olonade Fakeye
Lamidi Fakeye chooses to work in the
traditions of his father and other master Yoruba scultors.
To see a connection between Lamidis
and his fathers, look closely at the eyes and ears. They are
nearly identical. To contrast the two artists, study the two bases.
Lamidis base is far more elaboratea practice he began
early in his career which has since been widely copied. The ball
carved out of the base demonstrates his technical virtuosity.
