At the Smithsonian Genetics Program, under the supervision of Dr. Jesus Maldonado, my project involves using a noninvasive approach to determine population genetics parameters of the endangered San Joaquin Kit Fox, Vulpes macrotis mutica. In our study, we are using the San Joaquin kit fox as a model species to see if noninvasive methods can obtain data on population parameters similar to those obtained by a collaborator using radiotelemetry. If the two methods yield similar results, it will facilitate the use of noninvasive DNA methods instead of the conventional invasive methods used by other scientists studying carnivores.
